Cabarrus

county
Founded 1792

Also known as: Concord

Cabarrus County was formed in 1792 from Mecklenburg County and named after Speaker of the House Stephen Cabarrus. Early settlement was defined by a cultural division between German and Scots-Irish immigrants, who famously settled their disputes in 1796 by establishing the county seat of Concord (meaning "harmony").In 1799, the county became the site of America's first documented gold rush following a discovery at Reed Gold Mine. By the late 19th century, the region transitioned into a major textile manufacturing powerhouse, famously anchoring James Cannon’s textile empire in Kannapolis and hosting the nation's first African American-owned textile mill.
