Halifax is the capital city of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was founded by the British in 1749 as a fortified settlement and naval base on Halifax Harbour. In the nineteenth century it was an important military and maritime centre of the British Empire, with a strong garrison presence and connections to the Royal Engineers.
