Vernon was established in 1880 as Eagle Flat before being renamed and designated the county seat of Wilbarger County in 1881. It flourished as a major supply center on the Western Trail during the peak of the Texas cattle drives and expanded significantly with the arrival of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway in 1885. Historically, the town served as a vital regional hub for the cattle, cotton, and oil industries.
