Manistee
townAlso known as: Salt City, Manistee City
Located at the mouth of the Manistee River on Lake Michigan, Manistee developed as a prominent lumbering center and later a major salt producer, earning it the nickname 'Salt City.' During the lumber boom of the late 19th century, it was renowned for its Victorian architecture and high concentration of wealth, famously claiming more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the United States. Though much of the town was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1871, it was quickly rebuilt with substantial brick structures that now comprise a nationally recognized historic downtown district.
