village
Founded c.1086

Also known as: Glosop, Glossopdale, Howard Town, Old Glossop, New Glossop

An ancient parish and market town in the High Peak of Derbyshire, Glossop evolved from a medieval agricultural settlement into a prominent center of the cotton industry during the 18th and 19th centuries. Historically, the town comprised several townships including Whitfield, Hadfield, and Padfield, and was long-held by the Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk. By the late 19th century, it had consolidated into a municipal borough, known for its extensive textile mills and role as a gateway to the Peak District.
