East Hendred is an ancient village and parish at the foot of the Berkshire Downs, historically known for its medieval wool trade and its location along the Icknield Way. It is characterized by numerous well-preserved timber-framed buildings and the enduring presence of the Eyston family, who have held the manor of Arches since the 13th century. The village was a thriving market town in the Tudor era and remains notable for the 15th-century Champs Chapel and its strong Catholic heritage. Historically part of Berkshire within the Wantage Hundred, it was transferred to Oxfordshire in 1974.
