Freemans Bay
neighbourhoodAlso known as: Waiatarau, Waipiro Bay, Wai Kōtota, Te Koranga
Freemans Bay developed as one of Auckland's earliest European settled areas and was traditionally a working-class industrial hub. It was originally a tidal bay known for its sandy beach before extensive land reclamation between 1873 and 1901 transformed the shoreline into what is now Victoria Park. Historically considered a 'disreputable' quarter, the area hosted heavy industries like the city's gasworks and a major rubbish incinerator before undergoing significant gentrification in the late 20th century.
