Hamilton originated as a military settlement established in 1864 by the 4th Waikato Militia following the invasion of the Waikato. It was built on the site of several abandoned Māori villages, most notably Kirikiriroa, and developed into a major agricultural and service hub for the surrounding dairy industry. By the mid-20th century, it transitioned from a rural service town into a significant inland city and educational center.
